Where We Serve

The Parkinson Council’s mission is to raise funds to provide financial grants to Philadelphia and Delaware Valley based entities dedicated to:

  • Promoting research into the causes of and cure for Parkinson’s disease and quality of life issues.
  • Educating people with Parkinson’s, care-partners, health professionals and the general public about Parkinson’s Disease; and
  • Improving the quality of life for patients and their care-partners.

The Council provides financial grants in the following areas:

  • Research initiatives that may lead to improved quality of life, improved symptomatic relief from the effects of Parkinson’s Disease, and has the potential to lead towards the cause or cure for Parkinson’s Disease.
  • Activities that bring awareness of Parkinson’s disease to the medical, general and underserved communities through advocacy and education.
  • Support for emotional and physical needs that have the potential to improve symptoms and enhance quality of life for the person and care-partner.
  • Support groups for patients and care-partners.

Who's Eligible?

To be eligible for 2018 grant funding, your organization must be:

  • Located in the Greater Delaware Valley
  • A federal and state approved non-profit
  • In good financial standing
  • Able to receive and administer grant funds with the appropriate organizational capabilities

The Parkinson Council doesn’t make grants to individuals, government agencies, or for capital building or lobbying purposes.

Our Selection Criteria

The Council will conduct a disciplined review of each grant application received that fits our mission and areas of interest. Preference will be given to grants that:

  1. Project or estimate how “many lives are touched” throughout the grant cycle (exception is scientific research).
  2. Have a measurable impact on persons with PD and their families.
  3. Improve awareness of PD in the general population, traditionally underserved communities and medical providers who serve those communities.
  4. Conduct innovative research that:
    1. Has strong potential to improve quality of life;
    2. Is aimed at finding the cause or cure for Parkinson’s disease. Research that includes human clinical trials must have IRB approval before any funding is distributed. Research that includes animal experiments must include the institution’s animal care guidelines.
  5. Provide supportive services, whether for emotional or physical needs, that have the potential to improve symptoms and enhance quality of life for persons with Parkinson’s disease and their families.

The Parkinson Council’s grant cycle is a one-year cycle from January 1 through December 31, 2018.

Please mail one (1) original application, signed by the appropriate authority, and six (6) copies (all three-hole punched) to:

Faxed or emailed RFPs will not be accepted.

We will confirm receipt of your application via email. It is your responsibility to ensure that all application requirements are completed.

To ensure each project follows the purpose stated in the proposal, funded organizations will be required to submit to The Parkinson Council: 1) at 8 months, a written progress report, not to exceed three (3) pages, and budget expenditures, with projections of number of “lives touched”; and 2) a final project expenditure report on December 31, 2018. We ask that all funded organizations use the 2018 Grantee Goals and Activities Template.   • Those organizations that do not use the funding for the approved purposes stated in the application, do not notify the Council of personnel changes, or do not utilize the total funding amount rewarded within the award period, must reimburse The Parkinson Council or receive written approval to carry forward the funding into 2019.

Application Contents

1.  Cover letter

  • On your organization letterhead;
  • Signed by the appropriate organization authority;
  • Including all relevant information – Tax status, contact info, phone, fax, email, website, contact person and title, grant funds requested, dates covered by the project, formal project name, and if an award is made, the check payee and address.

2.  Abstract

Identification of the specific situation or problem that your proposal addresses. Please note the importance of describing your project in lay terms as well as scientific terms (if applicable). Not to exceed 300 words.

3.  Narrative

No more than four (4) one-sided pages, 12 point font, double-spaced and 1 inch margins (not including the budget) with:

  • Project goals and objectives: Using a template, list measurable goals, how they will be accomplished, and the time frame.
  • Project activities and methodology:  Describe your project in detail and show how it meets the mission of The Parkinson Council.
  • Project Timeline: Provide timeline, including project deliverables.
  • Scope of Work: Brief description of the role of each person you are requesting funding for in this application.

4.  Funding requested and detailed budget:

Please note that The Parkinson Council does not fund overhead (indirect) expenses. Include in the budget the total amount requested. Potential grantees must list any additional funding sources other than the amount requested from the Parkinson Council.

Funding of clinical services cannot exceed $100,000, equipment up to $10,000.

Funding for research: not more than $20,000 for post-doctoral research, not more than $50,000 for faculty-initiated research.

5.  Appendices (include the following as attachments)

  • Tax-exempt information.
  • List of staff to be involved in the project and bio-sketch (not to exceed two pages) or CV when appropriate.
  • IRB or IACUC approval, if appropriate.
